We need to stop thinking about art and creativity as opt-in, and more as opt-out. We are all born with a desire to think, create, imagine: these are the fundamental roots of art, of any film, music, art, sculpture or writing that we have ever admired. Creativity is born of our blood, as natural to us as breathing. And yet somewhere along the line we begin to believe that creativity is a gift of the select few, a chosen group whose upbringing, status, mental makeup etc. has in some way enabled them to “make things”. We limit our view of creativity to the arts: we forget that artists of this world are scientists, engineers, teachers, city planners, gardeners…creativity manifests itself in an infinite number of ways. It manifests itself in each person. Whether we decide to act upon it is another matter. But we must remember that creativity is not something we decide to do, it is something we decide not to do.
